A quiet room in a loud, beautiful city
Jerriciti began as a family house in the middle of Nairobi — thick clay walls, a courtyard that caught the four o'clock light, and a kitchen that always had something good on the stove.
We kept all of it. The arches, the brass, the habit of feeding whoever walks in. Around it we built twenty-four rooms for people who want Nairobi close enough to hear, and far enough to sleep through.

The city is still soft. Sun crosses the courtyard wall and turns the clay the colour of a ripe mango.

Mandazi, tree tomato juice, single-origin from Nyeri. Nobody is going to rush you out of that chair.

Markets, galleries, the museum, a taxi driver with opinions. Nairobi gives a lot in an afternoon.

Lanterns on, ice in the glass, someone playing something slow. The house exhales.

I have stayed in a lot of hotels in Nairobi. This is the only one I've been sad to leave. The light in the courtyard at seven in the morning is worth the trip alone.
